AI and 150 Million Jobs: Where You Stay Irreplaceable
26 giu 2026
I keep saying this. A 150 million job study just backed it up.
OpenAI studied more than 900 occupations and over 150 million US jobs.
The headline everyone will quote: 18% of jobs are at higher risk of automation in the short term.
The rest is where it gets interesting.
→ 24% will reorganize. The tasks shift, but people are still needed.
→ 12% could grow because of AI.
→ 46% will see little change for now.
Three things keep a human in a job, no matter how much of it AI can technically do:
→ Accountability. Someone has to approve, decide, or carry the responsibility.
→ Relationships. Trust, care, teaching, real human connection.
→ Physical presence. The work has to happen in the real world.
You have been hearing me repeating this over and over again.
The people who stay irreplaceable are the ones whose judgment, presence and relationships cannot be handed over.
So the better question is not "will AI replace me."
It is "where am I irreplaceable, and am I investing there."
Where are you hardest to replace?
What this means for your career in the AI era
The number that matters in this study is not 18 percent. It is the 24 percent of jobs that will reorganise. That is where most people actually sit. The work does not disappear, it changes shape, and the people who keep up are the ones who notice the shift early and move with it.
In the coaching work I do with senior leaders, the ones who feel calm about AI are not the ones who use the most tools. They are the ones who are clear about their own value. The job market has already been rewritten by AI, and they know which part of their work is theirs alone, the judgment, the trust they hold, the decisions only they can sign off, and they put their energy there.
Three places to look for your own irreplaceable zone:
→ Accountability. Where does the buck stop with you? AI can draft, model and suggest. It cannot carry the responsibility for a decision.
→ Relationships. Who trusts you, and why? Trust, care and teaching are built over time and cannot be handed over.
→ Presence. Where does your presence change the outcome? Some work only counts when a real person is in the room.
If you can name where you are hardest to replace, you can invest there on purpose instead of hoping it holds.
If this resonates and you want a practical guide, I have a free What AI Can't Hear pack that distils the seven listening behaviours from my TEDx talk, plus ten questions you can use with your team to talk about what AI can and cannot do.
