AI Rewrote the Job Market. Have You Kept Up?

One client applied for eighty roles in four months and got no offers, with fifteen years in financial services behind him. Volume stopped working when screening systems started filtering most applications before a person read them. The question worth asking now is which conversations get you seen at all.

Eighty applications in four months, and zero offers.

That is what the client sitting across from me had to show for fifteen years in financial services, an excellent network and strong references. A handful of first rounds, two second rounds, then silence.

When we sat down together I did not open his CV. I asked what question he was trying to answer, and he gave me the one everyone starts with: how do I get a job? I offered him a different one: how do you monetize everything you have built?

He looked at me blankly. That blank look is where this article starts.

What Is Actually Happening Here

Let us be honest about the market first, because denial is expensive.

Job openings in Switzerland have fallen from nearly 130,000 in 2022 to below 90,000 in 2025, according to SWI swissinfo.ch. The ILO unemployment rate rose from 4.7 to 5.1 percent in twelve months, as confirmed by SECO. In pharma, redundancies made up nearly 30 percent of total job losses in 2025. A major Swiss banking group has eliminated over 10,000 positions since its emergency merger with a rescued competitor. One of Basel's largest pharmaceutical companies is cutting hundreds of roles across its Swiss sites.

Behind those numbers sits a second shift. For the first time, economists project solid economic growth in 2026 alongside stagnant or falling job creation. Goldman Sachs named it precisely: sturdy growth, stagnant jobs. Companies are expanding output without expanding headcount, and AI is what makes that possible.

AI is also moving faster than the org charts. Task by task, it is changing which work still justifies a senior salary. Layers of knowledge work that used to need an expensive, experienced professional now run through tools that cost a fraction of the price. What keeps its value is judgment, relationships and the ability to make sense of complexity. Pricing that value is a skill in itself, and most senior professionals have never had to learn it.

For experienced professionals in Zürich this creates a specific problem. You are searching for something increasingly rare: a full-time, senior, well-defined role in a large organisation. The ones that exist attract enormous competition. Many that used to exist are simply gone.

The Question Worth Asking Instead

In coaching, the question I hear most often from senior professionals between roles is: how do I get back in?

Back into a structure, a title, a contract, a place on an org chart. I understand why. Corporate careers shape identity over decades. Your professional answer to "who are you?" was your organisation and your title, and when that disappears, the instinct is to find another structure that looks like the old one.

The market above is exactly why that instinct now leads into four-month application marathons. The structures are fewer, the queues are longer, and the roles worth having mostly never get posted.

The reframe that moves most of my clients: you have spent twenty years solving a specific kind of problem in a specific kind of environment. Who needs that problem solved, and what would they pay for it? Answer those two questions and you have a market instead of a queue.

That shift is a practical business decision, and it has never made more sense than now, while AI keeps changing what organisations need from the people they hire or engage.

What This Looks Like in Practice

The Switzerland management consulting market is currently valued at USD 3.58 billion and is projected to grow to USD 4.66 billion by 2031, according to Mordor Intelligence. The demand is coming from exactly the sectors where senior Swiss talent is most concentrated: financial services, pharma, precision manufacturing, digital transformation. Switzerland also consistently ranks among the highest-paying markets for independent consulting in Europe. According to the Metrics 2025 IT Consulting Report published by metrics.biz, daily rates for senior consultants in Switzerland are among the highest on the continent, exceeding CHF 2,400 per day at the top skill level in high-demand specialisations.

Those are market rates, paid to people who have packaged what they know clearly enough that someone will pay for it.

The packaging starts with language. “I was Head of Transformation” names a past role. Clients buy the version that names their problem: “I help multinational companies restructure without losing the people who matter.”

It continues with specificity. The most effective independent professionals solve one problem for one kind of client, and say so. And it needs visibility: a LinkedIn presence built on expertise instead of employment history, and a network you activate on purpose rather than revive in a panic.

The Channels Worth Exploring

Consulting and advisory work is the most direct translation. Mid-sized Swiss companies frequently need senior thinking they cannot afford or do not need full-time, and they buy it on a project or retainer basis.

Interim management is well established in Switzerland. Companies going through restructuring or leadership transitions often need experienced senior capacity for twelve to eighteen months. Michael Page notes in its Switzerland Job Market Outlook 2026 that interim and temporary roles are increasingly the fastest route back into meaningful, well-compensated work for experienced professionals.

Board and advisory roles reward a longer horizon, and they are worth building toward early. Thought leadership is the most underestimated channel, especially in Switzerland, where discretion is cultural. Visibility before you need a job is the new career strategy. One substantive post per week, kept up for a year, creates more market awareness than most application processes ever do.

Which of these channels could carry your first paid engagement?
