When AI feels human, what makes us human?

In my coaching sessions, I am using AI to help clients work through their emotions. The results are great—AI can listen, understand, and help people see things differently. It's becoming a real partner in helping people grow.

We tell ourselves AI can't replace real human connection—the warmth, the understanding, that special spark between people. But here's what I've been thinking about: What if our idea of "being human" changes completely?

Sam Altman's recent blog post "The Gentle Singularity" puts the rapid growth of AI as "𝘸𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴." 

From unbeliavable → through normal → to expectation.

In some time, when AI can match not just our words but our tone, our pauses, even our energy— will we still know the difference? Will it matter?

But Altman shares something that gives me hope: "𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨-𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘥𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘈𝘐: 𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥-𝘸𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘰, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴."

This is key. Because no matter how smart our tools get, one thing stays the same: People need to feel seen, heard, and valued by other people.

Maybe "being human" in the 2030s won't be about being the smartest in the room. Maybe it will be less about knowing stuff—AI will do that—and more about noticing.

As coaches, leaders, and people finding our way through these changes, our value might shift from having all the answers to asking better questions. From fixing problems to being present for people. From being experts to being human.

The future isn't just about AI becoming more human. It's about us remembering what being human was always about.
