AI keeps getting better every day. We don't.
We are panicking about being replaced by AI. And we have forgotten to do the one thing AI will never be able to do.
We are scrolling our phones instead of looking at each other.
We are scared of losing our jobs to machines while we have already stopped doing what makes us irreplaceable.
This moment from my TEDx talk points at the real problem, and it is not what you think. The solution is not about beating AI. It is about remembering what it means to be truly human.
Staying irreplaceable is not about beating AI
The whole debate is usually framed as a race. Get better at the things AI is good at, faster than AI does. It is a race no one wins, and chasing it pulls us away from our actual advantage.
Our advantage was never raw capability. It is attention, presence, and connection, the things that only happen between people who are actually looking at each other. What senior leaders actually need from AI is not to out-compute it, but to let it carry the mechanical work so they can spend more of themselves on the human work.
The irony is sharp. We worry about machines replacing us while we hand over, by distraction and habit, the very things they cannot do. The fix is not technical. It is to put the phone down and pay attention to the person in front of you.
