Here is what is driving it: routine execution is getting cheaper. Judgment-driven work is getting more expensive.
And on Upwork's own marketplace, freelancers selling AI work charge 34% more per hour than the ones who do not.😶
This person also has a name: AI Orchestrator. Someone who connects AI tools to real domain expertise, applies judgment, and turns all of it into a business result.
There is something else driving this, which I experience every day in my work: freelancers don't have to wait for gazillions of approvals.
If a freelancer decides on Tuesday that AI is now how they work, ie will use Claude Code as their operating system, they start on Tuesday. No six months in a committee. They move, and the market pays them for it.
The same person inside a company is still waiting for the tool and training needs to be cleared.
And the speed, oh wow. Finding the offer, setting the price, writing proposals, landing the first clients. What used to take a year of evenings now takes a few weeks.
The premium is on judgment. The people free to act on it get there first.

What the judgment premium means if you are still inside a company
The Upwork numbers describe freelancers, but the underlying shift applies just as much to someone still drawing a salary. Routine execution is getting cheaper everywhere. The people getting paid more are the ones adding judgment on top of a tool.
I see this constantly in my career coaching. A director leaves a reorganisation with twenty years of domain expertise and no language yet for what that expertise is worth outside the org chart. The market has already started pricing it, the person just has not caught up to the number.
The freedom Upwork's freelancers have, deciding on Tuesday and starting on Tuesday, is harder to borrow inside a large company. The underlying habit is easier to borrow: naming your judgment as a specific, sellable skill, rather than waiting for a title to do that naming for you.
