What's your 'lost in translation' moment at work?
What's your 'lost in translation' moment at work?
At EY, I am not just strategizing change projects; we are rolling up our sleeves and implementing them. This often involves working across continents, with our European and Indian teams. Over the years, I have understood how powerful is it to know about our differences.
Let me explain to you why.
Some years ago, during a project with the Indian team, I noticed there was silence in meetings where I was expecting critical questions. Everything seemed to be going smoothly, and no one raised any questions.
We were also facing tight deadlines, so I often jumped straight into work during our calls, trying to make the most of our time together.
Turns out, my assumption that everything was clear was wrong.
When I received the first draft of the work, it was completely different from what I had in mind. I was frustrated and confused.
Later, I realized I missed establishing a personal relationship at the start, something crucial for building trust and open communication in their culture.
Thanks to Erin Meyer's "The Culture Map," I also learned that in many Indian work cultures, indirect communication is a sign of respect. Out of respect, I did not get the direct feedback I would have needed!
We recently held trainings on cultural differences and collaboration in our Gurgaon and Bangalore offices, where we shared similar stories.
I have to admit, it was a unique experience. Though it initially felt challenging, by simply treating each other with respect and genuine curiosity, we found common ground and connected.
Stories about misunderstandings or "decoding techniques" were shared, and I felt the open conversations across all levels.
I am so grateful we had these sessions. By incorporating research and Meyer's book, we illustrated the importance of cultural understanding.
Breaking down cultural barriers starts with acknowledging our differences—and then embracing them.
When we invest in understanding and appreciating cultural nuances, we build the way for stronger connections, smoother collaboration, and ultimately, greater success.
