Why Small Businesses Have the AI Head Start
30 Sept 2026
You have no IT department and no marketing team.
Good. That is your head start with AI.
You have no IT department and no marketing team.
Good. That is your head start with AI.
I spend much of my year inside large companies, coaching and giving keynotes on AI.
They have the budgets, the licences and the IT teams. And still, often, the people further down don't feel that AI is theirs.
Because if nobody has shown you what AI does for your own Tuesday morning, it's hard to imagine. Any tool decision takes ages within the company.
A small business owner has none of that in the way.
You decide. We can choose a tool on Monday and have it up and running by Wednesday. And you feel the result on your own desk, in your own week, and you just got a new employee (or more).
I know this from the owner's place. I run The Change Republic without an IT department or a marketing team. One of my AI agents works on my website so that AI tools recommend me. Another collects my receipts for the bookkeeping.
Small business owners tell me they go to AI events, listen, and nobody translates it into a business like theirs.
So I wrote down what I look at first in a small business. Three tests, about 30 minutes:
→ Can a new customer find you, on Google and in ChatGPT?
→ How many customer lists do you really have?
→ Which small jobs do you pay others for?
What would you hand over first?

PPS: as the needle pillow tells, I did this recently at the amazing atelier of Anna K. Milojevic Keller, who is surely on a great AI journey now!
What I tell small business owners to check first
Big companies have the opposite problem from the one most people assume. They have the budget and the licences. What they often do not have is anyone who has shown an individual employee what AI changes about their own Tuesday morning. Without that, a six-figure AI rollout can sit unused on most desks.
A small business owner skips that step entirely. They feel the result in their own week, on their own desk, the same day they try the tool.
That speed is real, and it is also where I see owners waste it. They buy or test a tool because it is interesting, not because it answers one of three questions I now ask every owner I work with:
→ Can a new customer find you, on Google and inside tools like ChatGPT?
→ How many separate customer lists do you actually have, and do they agree with each other?
→ Which small, repeatable jobs are you still paying someone else to do?
Those three questions come from The Small Business Check, a short self-assessment I built after hearing the same gap from owner after owner: they go to AI events, listen to the big ideas, and leave without anything that applies to a business their size.
If you run a small business and want to work through this yourself, the check is free, takes about 30 minutes, and is available in English and German. Here is the link: https://www.thechangerepublic.com/ai-setup-small-business#small-business-check
