I recently wrapped up a great mentorship experience through a fantastic program, a collaboration between EY and the University of St. Gallen's Aiming Higher - Women's Leadership programme (link in comments).  

It got me thinking about my own mentorship journey, which started in a rather unexpected way.

Some years ago, a new corporate mentorship program launched at work.  I eagerly applied to be a mentee, hoping to learn from someone more experienced.  

Imagine my surprise when I was selected… to be a mentor!  

I’m still not sure if it was a mix-up, but I decided to go for it.  Honestly, I was terrified.

The first meeting arrived, and I sat there wondering what mentor-like wisdom I could possibly give.  

I felt like a fraud.  So, I just decided to be real.  

We had a genuine conversation, and it was…fun.  That initial experience shaped my entire approach to mentorship.

Since then, I have actively looked for opportunities to mentor, learning just as much from my mentees as I hope they learn from me.  

It’s a powerful cycle: giving back and growing at the same time.  

I encourage everyone to explore mentorship, whether as a mentor or mentee.  

It's an incredibly valuable experience, regardless of which side you choose.
