Unpopular opinion ⇉ Everyone thinks personal branding is bragging, but it's not.
Recently, I had the opportunity to train a group of managers on building a strong personal brand. I was especially glad to do this in EY, supporting younger colleagues growing as a leader.
Many people feel uncomfortable putting themselves out there or worry about sounding like they're bragging. There's a fear of making mistakes in public or simply not knowing where to start in a crowded digital world.
Sometimes, the biggest hurdle is simply feeling like you don't have anything special or unique to share, or wondering what others might think.
These feelings can hold us back from showing our true value and connecting with others authentically.
But in our session, we talked about how understanding your unique "differentiator" – that special superpower you bring – is the best piece of your pitch. Through my own journey, I've learned that embracing these challenges and focusing on my genuine story has been key to growth.
One by one, we explored the participants' backstory, role, aspiration and niche - further elements of a personal brand – to help them build confidence and clarity. This clarity helps cut through the noise and allows us to connect with others on a deeper level.
I am so excited to see this growth unfold for them!
