How employer-funded executive coaching actually works
Most senior professionals assume executive coaching is something they would have to fund themselves. In a lot of consulting and energy firms, that is not true. There is a coaching budget, and there is an approved pool of coaches you can request.
Three things worth knowing if you want to use it.
→ The budget often exists whether or not you use it. Firms set it aside for retention and development. Not asking does not save the money. It just leaves the benefit unused.
→ You usually request a coach through HR, L and D, or your sponsor. Knowing the internal channel matters as much as knowing the coach. A specific, confident request lands better than a vague one.
→ The work is yours, not your employer's. Funded coaching is still confidential. The agenda is set by you, whether that is promotion, a bigger role, or leading a team through the AI shift.
The pattern I see is simple. The people who benefit are the ones who ask. The same hesitation that holds people back from speaking up about their work also holds them back from claiming a benefit they have already earned.
